Put your necklace on last — after lotion, perfume, sunscreen, and hairspray. Those products are the most common cause of dulled metal and clouded stones.

Take it off before swimming, showering, or working out. Chlorine, salt water, and sweat all shorten the life of a finish.

Warm water, a drop of unscented dish soap, and a soft toothbrush is all you need. Brush gently, rinse, and dry completely with a soft cloth before storing.

Never use bleach, alcohol, or abrasive cleaners on any piece — they can permanently damage both the metal and the stone.

Silver naturally tarnishes with exposure to air. A polishing cloth brings the shine back in a minute or two. Storing pieces in a sealed bag between wears slows tarnish considerably.

Store pieces flat and separately — the box your order arrived in works well. Keeping chains apart is the simplest way to avoid tangles and the scratches that come from pieces rubbing together.

Fasten the clasp before putting a necklace away; an open chain is far more likely to knot.
